What programs will read keywords from an image’s Metadata?

Metadata EXIF

Programs that allow for both importing and exporting of keywords and ratings:

  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Adobe Bridge

Can I import photographs directly into Sort Shots using the Camera Connection Kit by Apple?

Currently, Apple does not allow developers to utilize the card reader/camera connection kit.  So images would have to be added to the default photo app and then imported from there.  When Apple does allow this, we’ll add the feature to import directly but until then we are stuck waiting.

Sort Shots does not support RAW files – why not?

The simple answer, it doesn’t make sense too.  RAW files are large and the capacity of the iPad’s are small in comparison.  For example, a camera such as a Nikon D7000 with 16.2 megapixels produces raw files of approx. 24.1 MB.  Which results in 440 images in 16 GB card.  If a user has a 16 GB iPad the maximum images they could hold is 440 assuming they had nothing on their iPad.

Can you explain what I need to do to use my existing metadata?

Nothing – they will appear magically!  No fuss, no muss!

Import your images via iTunes and your keywords will automatically appear in your tags under ‘Existing Tags’.  Apple Aperture, iPhoto, Nikon Capture NX, Expression Media and Microsoft Photo Gallery.  Additionally, ratings metadata is also imported for some programs including Adobe Lightroom and Bridge.  No more duplication of tags!  Plus, you can add tags and ratings in Sort Shots, pull them out of iTunes and Adobe Bridge and Lightroom will retain the data.

My keywords are not showing up in Sort Shots, what am I doing wrong?

Likely you aren’t saving the keywords to your photographs correctly.

For iPhoto instructions click here.

For Lightroom instructions click here.

How do I export my images back to Adobe Lightroom?

Sync your iPad with iTunes

Go to your Sort Shots Folder (Select your iPad under Devices, then Apps tab scroll down to File Sharing and select Sort Shots)

Select your images (Ctrl-A for all) and drop them into a folder on your computer.

Open Lightroom and select the folder (above).

Help, I can’t add photos to my Sort Shots Library?

You need to turn on your location services.  To do this go to your iPad Settings, select ‘General’ then ‘Location Services’ and enable location services for Sort Shots.  We have altered this setting in the latest update.

FTP is not working on my iPad?

Ensure that Wi-Fi has been enabled on your iPad:

1.  Tap on the ‘Settings’ icon in the Home screen.

2.  Tap on ‘General’ in the Settings pane.

3.  Tap on ‘Network’ then on ‘Wi-Fi’

4.  Tap on the WiFi ‘On’ button.

If your Wi-Fi is on, ensure location services are enables for Sort Shots:

1.  On your iPad – tap on Settings

2.  Tap on Location Services

3.  Toggle the Sort Shots switch to On

Is there a way to choose an image and make it my wallpaper on my iPad?

No, we are focused on helping people find their images in the most efficient manner.  Wallpaper isn’t within our scope.

I want to add photographs using FTP but need the software?

There is a free FTP client at http://filezilla-project.org/ which is easy to install and use.

How to I avoid Sort Shots from changing the file name on my photo?

Sort Shots does not change the file name, on the contrary we keep whatever is there.  If you use iTunes – Folder and/or FTP the files name remains intact.  If you add photos via ‘library’, Sort Shots does not have access to the file name.  This is not something we can change as Apple does not allow us to read the information.

How can I select more than one image to import into my Sort Shots folder?

Using iTunes:  Open the folder with your images, click on the first image on the list

Hold the Shift key down and then click on the last item in the list.

Drag the list into your Sort Shots Folder in iTunes.

Why can’t I import all of my images using the iPad Camera Connector or ‘Add Photos’ button?

Unfortunately, Apple does not allow developers to utilize this functionality.

How many Photos will my iPad hold?

It depends on a number of different factors including the size of your iPad, resolution, quality, size, etc of your image.

Can I download a hierarchial keyword list into my iPad?

Wish we could but not at this time.

Can I view the name of my image?

If you tap-and-hold on an image, a pop-over will appear with the file name, size and option to add it to a favorite.  At this time, we cannot exchange the rating for filename in the main library.

Do you offer full resolution or do I have to accept a low resolution copy?

All photographs stay in their native resolution with a temporary optimized thumbnail.  This allows you to import and export images without any loss of resolution so that your tags can be easily utilized elsewhere.

Does Sort Shots allow me to arrange my images in the sequence that I want?

Yes, you can create your own sequence or use a default (file name, size, rating, etc.).

I read an iTunes review that posted incorrect information on your app, can’t you fix it?

We have no control over this and have no way of fixing or replying to incorrect posts.  If you have a questions/concern please e-mail us first.  We have worked REALLY hard to make an amazing product and there is nothing more discouraging that reading a bad review especially when its incorrect.

This is the best photo app I have come across.

Thanks, we think it rocks too!  :)

I like the .app idea – can I use it?

.app is a registered trademark and can only be used with permission.  They can be contacted at info@dotappllc.com

It would seem that one could import photos into the iPhoto app on the iPad and then transfer them to Sort Shots as a work around for importing into Sort Shots directly on the iPad from a camera [SD Card etc] Is this a correct assumption.

I also would like my answer via my e-mail as well in the FAQ on your site if possible.
    Thanks
    Mel

Yes, your assumption is correct. You can import images via the camera connection kit and then add them to Sort Shots using the ‘Add Photos’ button. While we would love to have the option to select all of the images, Apple does not allow this so you have to select your images individually. If you have a few dozen it’ll take less than a minute of your time.

Can I use Sort Shots as described below?

    - Import images to iPad using Camera Connection Kit
    - Copy imported images into Sort Shots (1 by 1, I know)
    - Rate and tag my images with Sort Shots
    - Connect iPad to my Mac and import images to Aperture

My specific concerns with the above are to do with issues I have currently. Will the original image from my SD card be what’s passed to Aperture? Will it contain the original metadata simply augmented with the rating and tagging info I added? Will Aperture be able to see Sort Shots images as a separate event or category in the Import box? Are the ratings and tags recognized by Aperture as native ratings and tags?

I’m really frustrated with my current workflow and am hoping Sort Shots will help.

    Thanks, Travis

If i sort the photos using your app, will they then be in this order when i view them in the ipad photos tab? Or do i have to only use your app if i want to view them in the saved order?

    Thanks
    Sam

The sort and/or sequence is what Sort Shots is for and hence, only available within the app.

Remember, you can save a Sort for quick retrieval!

  7. admin 07. Jan, 2011 at 3:34 pm #

Sort Shots will do all of the actions you noted except import via the camera connection kit. This is a proprietary Apple device and as a Developer, we are unable to utilize its functionality.

All images are kept in their native resolution. Rating and tags will be passed on to Aperture via updates to the EXIF/Metadata.

I am not an expert Aperture user so I am not sure if it will see it as a separate event or category in the import box.

It’s a lot more enjoyable sitting on a couch with your iPad rating and adding tags than it is in front of a PC.

I don’t understand when I create a tag in say Places as North Island ( 2dn column) and I also want this tag in Family it tells me that that tag has already been created. How can I get the North Island tag to appear in the 2nd column so I can tag my Family photos that are relevant to the North Island as well?

  11. admin 24. Apr, 2011 at 5:57 pm #

To assign a tag to two different categories of tags – select the image, tap on the first column category i.e. ‘Places’ and tap on the check mark in the second column tag ‘North Island’. Then add another tag by tapping on the first level tag i.e. ‘People’ and either tap on the check mark to assign ‘People’ to the same image or add a second column tag say, ‘Mom’ by tapping on the check mark beside ‘Mom’. Now both ‘North Island’ and ‘Mom’ are assigned to the image.

Your FAQ (and reply to comments on the FAQ page) say you can’t select or import all images but the video under HowTo seems to suggest you can.

Which is correct? Or is select all a newly added iOS feature?

Also I presume I have to manually delete images from the “Photo” app after importing them into sort shots to claim back the memory. Or is this done automatically?

  13. admin 01. Jun, 2011 at 3:52 pm #

You are correct, it was an update a while back. The option to select an entire photo album and ‘select all’ was added a while back.

Correct, you need to delete the images manually in the default photo app. We don’t want to do this automatically. Of course, you could skip this by adding photos via iTunes Folders or via FTP.

I would like to use sort shots to import pictures, reorganize them with drag&drop and delete and then export the result in some way to ipad picture library or pc file system or someting so I can use my favorite viewers.

I can do import into sortshots and also reorder, but how can I then make the result available for other apps?

  15. admin 18. Jan, 2012 at 5:07 pm #

Best method is via FTP whereby you can download all of your photos back to your Mac/PC. Depending on your workflow you can then import them incorporate them into your workflow. Generally, most people have a folder on your desktop/laptop that they export the photos to which allows them to use them elsewhere and also provides a backup.

  16. Parema 19. Jan, 2012 at 8:50 am #

How is the new ordering of pictures transferred? I see that FTP will transfer existing pictures so deletions will be ok, but since there does not seem to be renaming or something similar I cannot see how the new ordering is transferred to the folder on pc/mac.
